Homemade Sesame Bagel

My MIL loves to eat bagel with cream cheese very much. In India we do not get bagels easily. Whenever she talks of her US trip she would say that she would love to have them again. When i tasted bagels for the first time and they were very tasty to have for breakfast. I felt i should learn to make bagels so that i can make some for my MIL.

I found this recipe on a blogger friend Vaishali and the original source refered by her is here.
I used the same procedure and they come out very well. My hubby was surprised when he came in the evening he saw the bagels and loved the fresh bagels. It is as easy as baking bread and i am sure you will enjoy it too.

I made a couple of sesame bagels and some plain bagels too. We liked the sesame bagels more.

Ingredients:
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1-1/4 cups of warm water
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds
Cooking Procedure:

Stage 1 - Making the Dough

Take 1 cup water in a bowl and add 2 tsp instant yeast and let it stand for 15 min.

After 15 min it will be foamy and is a sign that the yeast is active.

Take the flour and add it to the water slowly and knead into a nice soft dough.

Break it into 10 equal portion and let it stand for 20 min.

Preheat the oven at 425 F

Stage 2 - Shaping

After 20 min take each portion and roll it into a snake twice the length of your palm , bend it and join the ends.

Roll it again and make it a complete circle, seal the ends neatly with a hole in the center.

Take each portion and do the same and let it stand for 20 min. It will look puffy after 20 min.

Take water in a deep fry pan and bring it to a boil.

Stage 3 - Boiling

Once the water comes to a boil add the bagels into it but do not let it crowd.

Let it boil in it for 1 min on each side.

To make sesame bagels just have a dry plate ready with the seeds spread out on it. After the bagels have come out of the boiling water, place them face down onto the seeds.

Stage 4 - Baking

Taking a baking tray and lightly grease it with oil and then place the bagels with seed side up.

Bake on one side for 10 min , flip it and bake for another 10 min.

Your sesame bagels are ready !! After it cools pack it and use when needed.
